Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

National Curriculum 2013

DT at The Batt

Exploration and Innovation - Our scheme of work aims to ‘inspire pupils to be innovative and creative thinkers, who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation and evaluation. We want pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling, and testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their work and the work of others. We aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.’ (Kapow Primary).

Co-operation and Communication - Children regularly work together in pairs or groups to design and make their products and we support them to develop skills of cooperation and communication during this process. They learn to take turns, negotiate their ideas, listen to each other, and help each other. Children work on speaking and listening skills when collaborating on projects and develop written communication skills in the planning and evaluation stages of their projects.

At the Batt we use a long term plan which combines Design Technology and Art from Kapow Primary. This means children study either DT or Art every half term and ensures that children cover requirements of the national curriculum and build their subject skills and knowledge over time.

“My time at the Batt was great, we had the best teachers and I learnt lots to become more confident and believe in myself . The residential trip helped me to be independent and was so much fun. I always liked going to pantomime each year too. PE was my favourite subject, we had so many opportunities to play all different kind of sports, I was apart of the school teams and we won many Oxfordshire schools cups! I have lots of memories to treasure from my primary school days.”
