Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

National Curriculum 2013

Art at The Batt

Exploration and Innovation - Children use and experiment with a wide range of materials and resources to make marks, sculpt, draw and paint their own original pieces. They will develop and explore techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. There are no right or wrong answers, but children will evaluate and reflect and review and revisit their ideas in their sketch books.

Co-operation and communication - Children work together in pairs or groups for some units of work where they will develop skills in supporting and encouraging each other and discussing their ideas and techniques. They must learn how to share and take turns with resources. In looking at work of a range of artists, architects and designers children will discuss, listen to and formulate their own thoughts and opinions about works of art.

At the Batt we use a long term plan which combines Art and Design Technology from Kapow Primary. This means children study either Art or DT every half term and ensures that children cover requirements of the national curriculum and build their subject skills and knowledge over time.

“I really like my school as I have lots of friends and we always have fun at playtime on the trim trail. My Teacher and TAs are kind and help me to read and spell better. I like PE especially when we play dodgeball. I like everything about my school.”
